Technology is an essential tool in today’s business world. Devices like the cellphone, smartphone, computer, laptop and other pieces of technology have reshaped the world quickly. As a result of this rapid change, the way companies operate to keep up with competitors has been equally shifting. When companies examine their internal technology level, they are more likely to look at what they have rather than whom they have.
The obvious components companies will look at include hardware, computers, software, services, servers, backups, and other physical pieces of technology. What many companies fail to look at is their employees and how technology relates to their job and overall performance. While technical ability of employees is not required to be consistent across all jobs within the company – for example, a receptionist will not require the same technical knowledge of an IT technician, it is often required in all roles to some degree.
Sales people are often upgraded to smartphones or Blackberry devices in order to allow them to submit sales information no matter where they are. This technology has replaced paper reports and filing. But, what happens if that technology is simply too complicated for an older sales person to pick up quickly and effectively? How does the company react to this?
With the way that technology is rapidly growing and becoming more and more prevalent in our everyday lives, those within a company who cannot keep up risk being left behind as technological dinosaurs.
So how can a company ensure their employees are keeping up with the changes in technology by quickly adapting and evolving in as rapid a fashion as technology is? Essentially, it is crucial for companies to develop their employees. Technology training employees will affect (improve) an employee’s performance, knowledge and even their role in the company. New technology is not a challenge, but rather an opportunity for employees to improve.
